Overview

The BIFF Collaboration Grant, an annual prize awarded to two filmmakers who have participated in the previous year’s festival, seeks to advance further BIFF’s mission of supporting strong story-telling and the work of emerging independent local and international filmmakers. The focus of the grant must primarily feature unique stories about Barbados.

The BIFF Award for Best Local Film is open to all filmmakers with long-term residence in Barbados. The winner will automatically be paired with an international filmmaker to participate in the following year’s Collaboration Grant project. Based on their winning submissions in BIFF 2017, local filmmaker Clish Gittens and US-based Noah Lang will be the first pairing to collaborate on a short film. Gittens’ H2O took the prize for Best Short Film and Lang’s DIVERGE won for Best Science Fiction Film. Their collaborative effort will premiere at the upcoming Barbados Independent Film Festival.

On hearing he would be among the first recipients of the grant, Clish said: “This collaboration is an excellent opportunity for all local filmmakers. Not only can we enhance our skills and expertise practically through an international perspective, our work can also be showcased to a wider market. I am honoured to be the first recipient of this grant as it ties in with my motto – telling Caribbean stories through Caribbean lenses. The ability to partner with Noah Lang is exciting and could bring a novel interpretation to the unique culture of Barbados.”
